Swim Team Splits First Meets; Mott Qualifies For States

Trevor Mott didn’t waste much time assuring that he’ll make a second straight trip to the New York State boys swim meet this season.

The East Hampton senior hit the state qualifying standard time (4:52.52) in the 500-yard freestyle race at his team’s second meet of the season, against defending county champion Half Hollow Hills on Thursday. Mott qualified for states in the same event last year, along with teammate Thomas Brierley. They made Bonac history by becoming the first male swimmers from the school to qualify for states.

Mott was named East Hampton’s “swimmer of the meet” by his teammates.

East Hampton didn’t get a win against Half Hollow Hills, taking a 90-83 loss, but the Bonackers did have some positive results from the meet, aside from Mott’s performance.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Brierley, Mott, Chris Kalbacher and Shane McCann lowered the team record in that event from 1:45.82 to 1:45.22. Mott also swam in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.27 seconds and took three-tenths of a second off his previous best time; Baxter Parcher took five seconds off his previous best time in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:13.58; and Claudio Figueroa swam the 500 free for the first time, finishing in 6;48.99.

The Bonackers opened the season with an 89-73 win over Smithtown at the East Hampton YMCA on December 17. Like the Half Hollow Hills meet, it was also a non-league meet.

East Hampton got off to a great start in the meet, taking first and third place in the first event, the 200-yard medley relay. Brierley won the next event, the 200-yard freestyle. Other highlights included East Hampton taking first and second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, while freshman Christian Brierley and teammate Anthony McGorisk took first and second, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke.

Several Bonac swimmers achieved personal-best times as well: Nick Pucci shaved seven seconds off his previous best time in the 200 free, finishing in 2:12.00, while T.J. Calabrese took four seconds off in the same event, finishing in 2:13.07; Rob Rewinski took three-tenths of a second off his time in the 50 free, finishing in 24.38 seconds, while Christian Brierley (24.39) took one second off and Tyler Shaw (25.53) took three-tenths of a second off in the same event; in the 100 free, Anthony McGorisk (55.30) took four-tenths of a second off while Joe Gengarelly (57.93) took two seconds off; in the 500 free, Pucci (5:57.28) took a second off; and in the 100 back, Christian Brierley (1:02.33) took 1.5 seconds off and Figueroa (1:13.29) took a second off.

Tyler Menold was chosen as the swimmer of the meet by his teammates after swimming the 200-yard individual medley for the first time.
