The Pierson girls basketball team is sitting pretty at the top of the League VIII standings after a 46-30 win at Mercy on Monday night. The victory moved the Lady Whalers to 4-1 in League VIII, 5-6 overall. Their only league loss came against Southold (2-1, 2-5) back on December 20 in a four-point game.

In the win over Mercy, Pierson had a 27-18 lead at halftime, and put the game away for good by outscoring the Lady Monarchs 9-0 in the third quarter. Guard Kasey Gilbride led all scorers with 16 points and seven steals, while Erica Selyukova had seven points and 13 rebounds. Eilis Sheil had eight points and Isabel Peters added seven, while Bridget Canavan had four points and eight rebounds.

Before the win over Mercy, Pierson endured a string of non-league losses against larger schools. The Lady Whalers were downed 50-36 at home by Sayville on December 23 before losing 43-38 to Miller Place in the first round of the Hampton Bays Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament on December 27. In the consolation game the next day, Pierson lost 43-21 to Rocky Point.

Poor play in the second half was Pierson’s undoing in the Hampton Bays tournament. Against Rocky Point, the Lady Whalers were down only 19-16 at halftime but then scored just five points the rest of the way, all in the third quarter. May Evjen and Sheil led the team with five points each. Against Miller Place, Pierson was up 32-28 going into the fourth quarter, but got outscored 15-6, allowing the Lady Panthers to take the win. Canavan led Pierson with 12 points, while Gilbride added 10. Selyukova and Sheil each had six points.

The loss to Sayville had a similar theme—Pierson was up 23-21 at halftime before getting outscored 29-13 in the second half. Gilbride led the team with 16 points while Evjen added nine.

Pierson was originally slated to face East Hampton in a non-league game on January 3 but it was canceled due to bad weather.

Boys Beat Shelter Island

Like its female counterparts, the Pierson boys basketball team is also sitting atop the League VIII standings, moving to 4-1 in League VIII, 4-3 overall after a 57-48 win at Shelter Island on Monday night. Pierson had a 35-32 edge going into the fourth quarter, where Forrest Loesch hit two threes in the final two minutes to break a tie and give Pierson the lead for good. He finished with a game-high 21 points, while Ian Barrett added 19 and Sean Sloane had 12. Before the win over Shelter Island, Pierson lost, 66-54, in a non-league game with Shoreham/Wading River on December 27. Barrett led the Whalers with 19 points in the loss, while Duncan Bennett had nine, Robbie Evjen had eight and Loesch was held to just seven.

Bridgehampton

The Killer Bees fell to 0-4 in League VIII, 1-5 overall after a 57-47 loss at Southold on Monday night. The game was a tight battle through three quarters, with Southold holding a slim 41-40 lead going into the final period, but Bridgehampton was outscored 16-7 in that frame, allowing the Settlers to take the win. Tylik Furman led the Bees with 21 points while Josh Lamison added 17 points. Anajae Lamb had six and Elijah Jackson added three to round out Bridgehampton’s scoring. Liam Walker scored 21 points and Alex Poliwoda had 20 to lead Southold (4-2, 5-3 overall).
