The Westhampton Beach girls indoor track team went home with a bevy of medals from the Zeitler Relays held last Thursday, January 9, and the Art Mitchell Class Meet this past Saturday. Both events were at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood.
Nearly two dozen Lady Hurricanes medaled at the Zeitler Relays, where almost every event is done in relay fashion and each school competes in their respective leagues. Westhampton Beach competed in the League IV races.
The 4×400-meter relay team of Lauren Lorefice, Grace Gilbakian, Nora Murphy and Jenny Jordan took first place, crossing the tape in 4:19. The 4×800-meter relay team of Emily Wichard, Kaitlyn Brierton, Reilly Gwinn and Jenny Jordan placed second in 10:52.
Mason and Ellen Griffin won the 1,500-meter race walk relay with a combined time of 15:40. Mason finished in 7:20 while Griffin finished in 8:20.
Brierton, Gwinn, Jenny Jordan and Sabrina Mason placed second in 14:14 in the distance medley relay, which is 1,200-, 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter runs that are completed consecutively. The sprint medley team (400-, 200- , 200-, 800-meters) of Lorefice, Gilbakian, Isabella Recchion and Alexis Smith placed third in 4:42.
Lucy DiBennedetto and Freesia Ferrantino threw for a combined distance of 50 feet and ¾ inch in the shot put. Their personal throws were not provided. Smith placed third in the high jump after reaching 4 feet 8 inches.
At the more recent invitational, Saturday’s Art Mitchell, all athletes competed in their respective classes. Jordan won the freshman 1,500-meter race in 5:13 and finished second in the freshman 3,000-meter race in 11:34. Brierton placed sixth in the 3,000 in 12:06.
Recchion won the sophomore 55-meter dash in 7.8 seconds, just a tenth of a second ahead of Comsewogue’s Tori Reid. Serena Choi placed second in the freshman 55-meter dash in 8:01 seconds and placed fourth in the freshman 55-meter hurdles in 10.4 seconds.
Lorefice placed second in the open 300-meter dash in 42.7 seconds and finished fifth in the open 55-meter dash in 7.7 seconds. Gilbakian placed second in the sophomore 600-meter run in 1:47 with Murphy coming in right behind her in 1:48.
DiBennedetto placed third in the open shot put with a throw of 29 feet 8 inches. Kelsey Jordan placed third in the freshman race walk in 9:02. Mason placed sixth in the open 1,500-meter race walk, finishing in 7:29. Gwinn finished fifth in the freshman 1,000-meter race in 3:29.
Smith claimed sixth place in the open high jump by reaching 4 feet 8 inches. And Brandi Spano finished sixth in the sophomore triple jump by leaping 29 feet 4 inches.
The Hurricanes had one crossover this past week and it was held Sunday at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. Graham Brown and two relay teams had the highest placements on the day for Westhampton Beach.
Brown finished second in the 1,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 2:05.05. The 4×200-meter relay team of Khai Henderson, Mike Gattuso, Eric Silverman and Chris Razzano took second in 1:45.53. The 4×400-meter relay team of Brown, Roger Llivasaca, Chase Goulding and David Nowak also finished second in 3:59.86.
Silverman placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet 5 ¾ inches.
A number of athletes finished sixth in their respective events: Henderson finished the 300-meter dash in 40.71 seconds; Jimmy Jordan finished the 1,600-meter race in 5:08.57; and Llivasaca finished the 600-meter run in 1:35.29.
The Eastport South Manor boys indoor track team competed at the Molloy Stanner Games this past weekend and held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in New York City.
Luke Lafferty placed fourth out of 77 participants in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet 10 ½ inches. Jagger Chaisty leaped a personal best 17 feet 10 inches, good enough for 34th place. Ryan Corbett finished 71st out of 167 runners in the 1,600-meter race, crossing the tape in 4:52.
The Lady Sharks were led by a number of freshmen during the Art Mitchell Class Meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday.
Kelsey Huff won the freshman 1,000-meter race in 3:21.26, Taylor McClay took top honors in the freshman 600-meter run in 1:42.26, and Michela Brummerloh finished first in the freshman high jump, reaching a height of 4 feet 10 inches.
Ashley Schafer placed second in the open 3,000-meter race in 11:12.27. Kelly Gomez placed fourth in the sophomore 55-meter dash in 7.97 seconds. And Kaeli Huff took third in the sophomore 300-meter dash in 44.93 seconds.
