Sophomore Gabby Gavalas was the standout performer for the Southampton girls indoor track team last week, with strong efforts in two races at the Art Mitchell Meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday.
Gavalas had a personal-best time of 8.33 seconds in the 55-meter dash, finishing 11th overall, and she also reached a personal-best time in the 300-meter dash, finishing in 49.82 seconds. Both were sophomores races.
Kayley Ritz earned a personal-best time in the sophomore 55-meter hurdles in 11.40 seconds, while Hannah Connolly-Sporing was fifth overall in the open 300 in 44.61 seconds. Valentina Kobler had a personal-best time of 9:10.39 in the open 1,500-meter racewalk, and Michele Abatangelo had a personal-best time of 1:56 in the open 600. She also reached a personal-best time in the open 300, but her time was not available.
The Lady Mariners participated in the Zeitler Relays at Suffolk West on January 9 and came away with some good results. The distance medley relay team took third in 14:56, with Michele Abatangelo running the lead 1,200-meter leg, Miranda Maloney following in the 400-meter portion, Hadi Ramos running the 800 and Lumei Abatangelo running the 1,600 anchor leg. The sprint medley relay team of Erika Gulija (400 meters), Gavalas (200), Chloe Schmidt (200) and Connolly-Sporing (800) took second in 4:42.89, and the same quartet of girls finished third in the 4×200-meter relay in 2:44. Kobler and Jolynn Buzubek teamed up in the 1,500-meter racewalk, taking third in 10:34.
The Southampton boys indoor track team participated in a crossover meet at Suffolk West on Sunday, although many of the athletes did not attend the meet because they were away on a school ski trip.
Sebastian Cuyjet-Hunter had his best time of the season in the 1,000-meter race, finishing 11th in 3:01.77. Ricardo Chino was 14th in the same race in 3:04, a season’s best time for him as well. Johnny Navan took 10th in the 55-meter dash in 7.42 seconds, while Kyle Vella had his season’s best time in the 600, finishing in 1:37.82. In the freshman 600, Trevon Jenkins had his season’s best time, finishing in 1:43.21.
