Update, Friday, 11 a.m.
According to the Stony Brook Southampton University Police, the cause of the accident on Tuckahoe Road early yesterday evening is still under investigation, and no charges have been filed. Police also said that the driver was transported to Southampton Hospital, and that only two of the campuses buildings lost power despite reports at the scene to the contrary.
Power was restored to surrounding homes and the nearby traffic signals in waves, starting at about 5 p.m.
The road was cleared by university police for travel at about 10:30 p.m., although they said Southampton Town Police remained at the scene to direct traffic away from the cleanup crew.
Update, Thursday, 4:40 p.m.
The Stony Brook Southampton campus, as well as several homes nearby, lost power after a driver lost consciousness and his vehicle hit a utility pole on Tuckahoe Road. Southampton Fire Chief Dennis Roy said the driver had minor injuries. Tuckahoe Road was closed while responders waited for power to be restored and the scene to be cleared.
A vehicle ran into a utility pole at Tuckahoe Road and County Road 39, reportedly knocking the pole down, shortly before 4 p.m. on Thursday. Southampton Town Police confirmed that the call came in at 4 p.m. and that the Stony Brook University Police Department was also responding, as the accident took place near the the university’s Southampton campus. It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries.
