Several Lady Mariner sprinters posted their best times of the season at the Jim Howard Invitational at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Gabby Gavalas was impressive for the second week in a row, winning her heat in the 55-meter dash in a personal-best time of 8.20 seconds, finishing 16th overall among small schools competitors. The Jim Howard meet is divided by large and small schools, with Southampton competing in the small schools division.
“She’s taking it to another level as far as improving each week,” Southampton head coach Eddie Arnold said of Gavalas. “She’s coming along really well.”
Also in the 55-meter dash, Chloe Schmidt posted a personal-best time of 8.33 seconds, and Sarah Warren finished in 9.10 seconds, also a personal best.
In the 1,500-meter racewalk, Sienna Gates had a personal-best time of 10:05, while Hannah Connolly-Sporing finished sixth in the small schools division in the 600-meter race, crossing the tape in 1:46.34. Erika Gulija was 15th in the same event, finishing in 1:51.94.
In the 3,000-meter race, Lumei Abatangelo was sixth in 12:12, and in the 300-meter race, Miranda Maloney finished in a personal-best time of 48.9 seconds.
The Lady Mariners will be back at Suffolk West on Sunday for the League Championships, and on Friday, January 31, they will compete in the Small Schools Championships.
