In its only meet of the week, the East Hampton boys swim team put in another impressive performance, getting stronger as the day went on in a 95-73 home win over Deer Park on Thursday. The Bonackers improved to 2-2 in League II, 3-3 overall with the win.
Dominance in the backstroke and breaststroke events, in particular, was key in the win, according to head coach Craig Brierley, who pointed out that his swimmers outscored Deer Park 31-15 in those three events.
In addition to strong efforts in those events, several other Bonac swimmers were strong in the win. Trevor Mott won the 200-yard freestyle with a personal-best time of 1:48.41, while T.J. Calabrese was third in the 500 freestyle by just three seconds, and he took 30 seconds off his previous best time in that event, finishing in 5:51.67. Calabrese also improved his previous best time in the 200 freestyle by two seconds, finishing in 2:11.38, and he took 0.7 seconds off his best time in the 400 free relay.
“T.J. has been working hard and has shown huge improvements lately,” Brierley said. “It will be exciting to see what he can do in next week’s meets.”
Calabrese was named the Swimmer of the Meet by his teammates for his efforts.
Brierley was also happy with Henry Uihlein, who competed in the 100 butterfly for this first time this season and had a “respectable” time of 1:21.68.
“This was a very brave endeavor for Henry considering he is not a year-round swimmer and only started developing the stroke this year,” Brierley said. “The future looks bright.”
Joe Gengarelly, who was named the Swimmer of the Meet in East Hampton’s meet with Harborfields on January 15, performed well again, dropping 0.2 seconds off his previous best time in the 100 breaststroke, taking first in that race.
Other personal-best times in the Deer Park meet included Rob Rewinski in the 50 butterfly portion of the 200 medley relay (26.88 seconds); Dylan Camacho in the 50 backstroke of the 200 medley relay (35.23 seconds); Mott in the 400 free relay (50.30); Anthony McGorisk in the 50 freestyle (25.35); Henry Whitney in the 50 free (26.47) and the 200 free relay (25.42); Christian Brierley in the 200 free relay (26.11); Robert Anderson in the 200 free relay (24.22); Caleb Atkinson-Barnes in the 200 free relay (26.59) and the 400 free relay (59.43); Tony Sanchez in the 200 free relay (32.23); Noah Gualtieri in the 200 free relay (34.15); and Harrison Kennedy in the 400 free relay (1:04.37)
