Happy birthday to Kathleen Tonnesen. Kathleen’s day to shine is on Saturday, February 1. Don Veeck’s big day falls on Sunday, February 2. George Skidmore and Tommy Garity share the same day—Monday, February 3—and Sandy Holzman’s cake-and-candle day is on Tuesday, February 4.

The Hampton Bays Historical and Preservation Society is pleased to announce that John Siebold was the winner of the society’s quilt raffle. The beautiful quilt was made by Hilda Blevins of Hampton Bays.

While I am speaking of the Blevins family, Elizabeth Blevins, the daughter of Hilda and Craig Blevins, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall term at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Elizabeth is a senior majoring in accounting—CPA and business administration.

Island Girl Art, a group show, will have landscapes, seascapes, portraits and other mixed media images on display at the Hampton Bays Public Library next month. Many of the artists are members of the North Shore Art Guild and The Brookhaven Arts & Humanities Council.

While you are at the library, be sure to visit Jack Capone’s collection of World War II memorabilia that is on display downstairs in the lower lobby.

There are lots of students making the grade in the Hampton Bays School District. Second-grader Elise Flynn, seventh-grader Riley Tupper and high school senior Kasandra Phillips were recently recognized as November’s Students of the Month.

And first-grader Edward Reyes-Lopez, eighth-grader Kenia Torres and high school senior Adem Hadrovic achieved Student of the Month honors for December. Good job!

In keeping with an annual tradition, the Hampton Bays Fire Department challenged elementary and middle school students to share their thoughts on fire safety and prevention. Kindergarten through sixth grade students created posters while the seventh- and eighth-graders wrote essays on the subject.

Three students from each grade were selected and the first-place winners were awarded engraved trophies, while the second- and third-place finishers took home engraved medallions. In addition, all the winners received a certificate from the school and a $30 gift certificate to Skidmore’s Sports & Styles, courtesy of the fire department.

Congratulations to the following students who are listed in the order that they placed: kindergarten—Madelyn Francolini, Zoe Guastella and Matthew Zheng; first grade—Alan Ramirez, Tifany Gomez and Yusabeth Contreras; second grade—Allison Sequeira, Eskarli Banegas and Riley Mitchell; third grade—Joscelyn Sandoval, Christopher Martinez and Marelyn Bonilla; fourth grade—Hayden Bevis, Lily Simpson-Heavey and Diego Escalon; fifth grade—Teresa Lauther, James McGregor and Emma Naclerio; sixth grade—Nicholas Corredor, Marissa Kennedy and Diego Vivar; seventh grade—Domenico Pensa III, Rachel Reycroft and Marley Montague; and eighth grade—Lindsay Dunn, Daniel Dimijian and Nicholas Fotopoulos.

Way to go, Baymen!
