The Eastport South Manor wrestling team split its final two League V dual meets of the regular season last week. The Sharks lost, 54-18, at home to Kings Park on Thursday, January 23, but won their season finale, 43-27, at Comsewogue on Friday night.
The Sharks finished the League V season with a 3-4 record, but are ranked third in the county as a tournament team.
Nick Garone (138 pounds), Sean Carey (145) and Mark Zaharis (160) all won both of their matches last week. Garone won a 12-4 major decision over Alex Miles of Kings Park and pinned Comsewogue’s Nick Riordan in 53 seconds. Carey won a 14-6 major decision over Comsewogue’s Ryan Szalay and an 8-6 overtime decision over Ryan Valinchus. Zaharis won a 12-6 decision over Hugo Campos of Kings Park and a 5-2 decision over Luke Panessa of Comsewogue.
Adam Busiello (99) and Joe Zarcone (285) also got credited for two wins last week. Each won a match by forfeit against Comsewogue. Busiello won by technical fall (19-2) over Stefan Major of Kings Park, while Zarcone won a 3-1 decision over Kingsman Matt Guercio. Zarcone ends the league season with an undefeated record and should be the top seed at the League V Tournament, which is at ESM on Saturday, February 8. It’s slated to start at 9:30 a.m. and there is a $6 admission fee.
Going into the tournament, there are many Sharks who are ranked in Suffolk County’s Division I. Travis Passaro (126) and Jimmy Leach (138) remain atop the rankings of their respective weight classes. Busiello and Dylan Kane (152) are ranked fourth while Garone is ranked fifth. And Zarcone appears in the rankings for the first time this season at sixth.
