In anticipation of the summer rush, the Goldberg’s Famous Bagels empire is set to more than double its number of storefronts on the East End.
Cousins Mark Goldberg and Paul Wayne now own three bagel shops in Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk. The stores are open year-round and apparently have been successful enough that the cousins have their sights set higher.
The pair just recently signed a 10-year lease to open a new branch in Napeague, at the former site of Espo’s Surf Shop. They plan to be ready for business there by late April.
In addition, as a solo venture, Mr. Goldberg is opening three new Goldberg’s Famous Bagels stores in Bridgehampton, Mattituck and Riverhead.
The Bridgehampton store, across from Bridgehampton Commons and currently the site of The Pizza Place, will be the first of the three to open, Mr. Goldberg anticipated, saying it should be ready on May 15.
The Riverhead store will be downtown on Main Street, near the Suffolk Theater, according to Mr. Goldberg, and the Mattituck store will be in the Waldbaum’s shopping center on Main Road.
All the shops will need an interior makeover, Mr. Goldberg said, but they do not need so much work that they won’t be ready to go in plenty of time for summer.
Mr. Goldberg said he isn’t sure whether the new stores will be year-round ventures, but he predicted that they will all be much more than seasonal businesses. In fact, he said he and Mr. Wayne had the same mindset going in to the opening of the Montauk store, which is now open seven days a week, year-round.
With their relatively close proximity to beaches and beachgoers, the stores will have beach-oriented meals wrapped and ready to go.
Mr. Goldberg said they are close enough to beaches and hotels, yet far enough from competitors—even far enough away from one another—that they will not steal one another’s business.
“[The Pizza Place] location [in Bridgehampton] is kind of the perfect spot, because it is right in the middle of the East Hampton and Southampton stores,” Mr. Goldberg said, noting that, at least for now, all the new branches will be on the East End.
