The average annual snowfall in New York City is 28 inches. The winter of 1995-96 produced 75.6 inches of snow in Central Park. So far this winter they’ve seen 55.6 inches. You know it is a slow news day when the big story is finding the dirtiest car in the area due to the snow and salt and sand that have been dumped on the roadways. The crazy weather we’ve seen this winter is a big topic of conversation wherever you go. Many people have given up and thrown in the towel … or snow shovel.
People are counting the number of days until spring arrives and dreaming of warm beaches and drinks with umbrellas in them. Myself included!
Long Island Winterfest 2014 continues over on the North Fork with music, food, wine and special events on the calendar through Sunday, March 16. Jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass and more types of music are being performed at local vineyards on weekends. Some events have been rescheduled for later in March due to the (ahem) weather. (Surprise, surprise!) Check the website www.liwinterfest.com for a full listing of events.
The Eastport South Manor High School Concert Choir will sing the National Anthem at the Islanders game next Thursday, February 27. This has become an annual tradition for this talented group.
The ESM Music Boosters will provide dinner for the students before they leave for the game. Contact the Music Boosters on their Facebook page if you can help out with the dinner.

Congratulations to Brandon Calderone of Eastport who has been named to the dean’s list at the University of Delaware.
Casey Pitcher of Eastport, a 2013 graduate of ESM, is a member of the exclusive Laurentian Singers at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. The prestigious a cappella group is currently rehearsing for their singing tour in Trinidad next month.
Casey, who had the lead male role of Harold Hill in last spring’s production of “The Music Man” at ESM, is a member of three singing groups at St. Lawrence where he is a freshman. (Yes, I am one proud mother!)
