POLICE: East Hampton Man Arrested And Charged With Gun And Narcotics Possession


An East Hampton man was arrested on Wednesday, April 16, after East Hampton Town Police said they found a loaded handgun and cocaine inside his Morris Park Lane home.

According to Detective Sergeant Gregory Schaefer, Melvin C. Smith, 48, was arrested at 11:42 a.m. on Wednesday and charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a felony, one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a misdemeanor, and one count of unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Det. Sgt. Schaefer said the department was assisting with Mr. Smith’s probation with a search of his residence. Mr. Smith has an “extensive history” and has been charged with five felonies stemming from narcotics, according to the detective. He was arraigned the next morning and then remanded to the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside.
