We all know that April showers bring May flowers. Well, Southampton Town Councilwoman Christine Scalera is counting on those spring sprinkles this Saturday, May 3, as she joins members of our community at “planting day” over at the new Flanders Community Garden.Starting at 9:30 a.m., volunteers will gather at the David W. Crohan Community Center off Flanders Road and fill the wooden garden beds that they constructed there last month. Organizers intend to plant vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit seeds, and everyone is invited to come get their hands dirty.

The garden is being funded by the New York State Department of Health in collaboration with the Family Health and Wellness Program through the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County.

It is exciting to see such a thing sprout up (couldn’t resist!) in Flanders. A community garden is a great way to bring neighbors together to grow their own food. This is a health kick that many should want to get in on.

If you would like more information, please contact Ms. Scalera’s office at (631) 287-5745.

On Sunday, May 4, you and your family might be interested in taking a trip over to the Flanders Memorial Park on Flanders Road and attending the Flanders Fire Department’s annual Memorial Service, which begins at 10 a.m.

Stop down and be a part of a brief ceremony honoring our departed members and firefighters. It is a great way to pay tribute to those who volunteered their service to our community. And the kids love to see the firefighters in their dress uniforms, and all of the fire trucks will be there as well. It’s just another great way to come together as a community.

Finally, anyone living here in Flanders should be prepared for a number of upcoming celebrations in our little hamlet over the next week or two.

On Saturday, May 3, we will celebrate our daughter Mackenzie’s first Holy Communion at St. Rosalie’s Church. Our family and friends will gather later in the month for more of a “Rocco-style celebration.” Still, we are so proud of Kenzie and her hard work at school this year in preparing for this very special day.

It’s certainly going to be a busy weekend for us since our son, Travis, will then celebrate his 17th birthday on Monday, May 5. We couldn’t be more proud of him and his accomplishments. Happy birthday, Travis! Daddy, Brittany, Kenzie and I wish you the most wonderful year ahead and, of course, the best birthday ever (although I am not sure anything could beat your Teletubbies party). We love you.

In more birthday news, Taylor Konkel turned 17 this past Tuesday, April 29, and celebrated with her friends and family. Travis and Taylor practically grew up together, so this is one of those “They’re HOW old?” moments for both of our families. We all hope you enjoyed your special day, Taylor!

More birthday wishes go out to Sherry VanReine who will blow out her birthday candles on Sunday, May 4, with her family. All of us here in Flanders wish you the best for a wonderful year ahead.

Rounding off the birthday celebrations is Donald Normoyle who will be making his birthday wish on Tuesday, May 6. Happy birthday to you, Donald. We are all sending you birthday love. Enjoy your day with your family and friends.

And, last but not least, happy anniversary to Bobby and Holly Shepherd! They celebrated 21 years of marriage on Saturday, April 19. That’s quite a milestone! Personally, I’m happy to see two great people still together and loving life together after all these years. Best of love and luck to both of you. Here’s to another 21 years!
