Hurricanes Remain Unbeaten; Bonackers Get First League Win

As of Tuesday morning, only two opponents stood between the Westhampton Beach boys tennis team and an undefeated League VII championship.

The Hurricanes improved 10-0 in League VII play, 11-2 overall, after a 7-0 win over William Floyd at home on April 23 and a 6-1 win at Mattituck on Monday. Westhampton Beach was slated to face Shoreham/Wading River at home on Wednesday, April 30; a win would assure the Hurricanes of at least a share of the league title. They will close out the regular season at second-place Ross on Thursday, May 1.

In the win over Mattituck, Cooper Lacetera beat Garrett Malave, 6-2, 6-4, at first singles, while Kevin Cino beat Parker Tuthill, 6-4, 6-4, at second singles. At third singles, Hurricane Matt Higgins lost, 6-3, 6-1, to Andrew Young. Mattituck forfeited to Westhampton Beach at fourth singles.

At first doubles, Brian Schwartz and Zach Ellenhorn beat Charles Hichox and Joe Macaluso, 6-1, 6-0; at second doubles, Luke Jurow and Beecher Halsey beat Ty Bugdin and Sean Granberg, 6-2, 6-2; and at third doubles, Mattituck forfeited to Raj Ghayalod and Riley Smith.

Against Floyd, Lacetera beat Ray Jiang, 6-1, 6-1, at first singles; Cino beat Brandon Jiang, 6-0, 6-3, at second singles; Halsey beat Kevin Jiang, 6-4, 6-3, at third singles; and Jurow beat Chris Robertson, 6-1, 6-0, at fourth singles. Schwartz and Ellenhorn beat Peter Rasmussen and Nick Janzer, 6-1, 6-2, at first doubles; Ghayalod and Smith beat Jason Row and Maxx Merlero, 6-0, 6-0, at second doubles; and Sam Santora and Christian Prag beat Danny Cresci and Dave Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-1, at third doubles.

East Hampton

The Bonackers finally earned their first League VII win of the season, improving to 1-9 in league play, 2-9 overall, with a 5-2 home win over William Floyd (3-7, 4-10) on April 22.

At first singles, Bonacker Julian MacGurn beat Ray Jiang, 6-2, 6-1, and at second singles Ravi MacGurn beat Brandon Jiang, 7-6, (7-5), 7-6 (8-7). East Hampton’s Matt Lownes lost, 6-2, 6-2, at third singles to Kevin Jiang, while Bonacker Ben Karlin beat Chris Robertson, 6-4, 6-1, at fourth singles.

At first doubles, East Hampton’s Brady Yusko and Nicki Neubert beat Peter Rasmussen and Nick Janzer, 6-2, 6-1, and at third doubles, Harrison Kennedy and Zach Bogetti beat Bryon Ruales and Matt Cavaliere, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7, 6-2. At second doubles, Bonackers Matt McMullan and Kyle Fallon lost, 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, to Dawson Kropp and Desmond Scott.

Against Shoreham, Karlin won the only match in the singles draw for the Bonackers, winning, 6-4, 6-2, at fourth singles. Yusko and Neubert won, 6-4, 6-4, at first doubles, while Kennedy and Bogetti won, 8-6, in a tiebreaker to decided third doubles. East Hampton lost the rest of the matches in straight sets.

Southampton

The Mariners moved to 3-8 in League VII, 4-10 overall, after losing, 6-1, at Ross on Monday, beating Shoreham/Wading River, 4-3, at home on April 25, and falling, 5-2, at Mattituck on April 23. The Mariners were slated to finish the regular season at home against East Hampton on Wednesday, April 30.
