International Surgical Mission Support Team Travels To Ghana To Provide Medical Care

The staff of Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, Ghana, welcomed International Surgical Mission Support (ISMS) Team New York—a Southampton-based charity, which brings together the region’s medical professionals for volunteer medical missions—for its mission in March. Holy Family Hospital is the only large hospital that covers a large region of Ghana and provides care for more than 250,000 patients every year. The hospital has a skeleton staff with one official surgeon and one official gynecologist, and limited resources. The ISMS Team included two general surgeons, two OB/GYN surgeons and a plastic surgeon, along with others—many affiliated with Southampton Hospital. The ISMS team routinely worked late into the evening to treat 68 complex cases. The team’s pulmonary critical care doctor also treated a variety of non-surgical patients throughout the week. The team donated medical equipment and supplies to the hospital as well.
