A Water Mill-bred horse shared a bright spotlight this weekend, as it won the right to compete in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
The horse, Samraat, is owned by My Meadowview Farm, a Water Mill-based horse farm owned by Leonard Riggio, the founder and chairman of Barnes & Noble. The Kentucky Derby website had the final odds for Samraat at 16-1.
Throughout the course of this racing season, Samraat accumulated 100 racing points to qualify to run in the Derby, and won three of his last four races, all of which took place at Aqueduct Racetrack. Samraat, who was ranked fifth going into Saturday’s race, started from gate 6.
The 3-year-old colt, trained by Rick Violette Jr., was ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz on Saturday, according to KentuckyDerby.com.
