Remsenburg Couple Chases Away Burglar; Incident Sparks Manhunt

Local police departments launched an hour-long search for a robbery suspect late Monday night after a Remsenburg couple chased a burglar out of their Nidzyn Avenue home.

Southampton Town Police responded to a 911 call from the hamlet at 10:45 p.m. and were joined by Westhampton Beach Village and Quogue Village police officers, a Riverhead Town Police K-9 unit, and a Suffolk County Police helicopter, all of which scoured the area for the male subject until about midnight but were unable to locate him, Town Police Sergeant Susan Ralph said Tuesday afternoon.

Town Police Detective Sergeant Lisa Costa said the man forced his way into the home on Nidzyn Avenue but ran away after being confronted by the homeowners.

“It appears the burglar was targeting what appeared to be an unoccupied home,” Det. Sgt. Costa said.

The man fled the property with “household items,” she added, declining to specify what exactly was taken.

Police are still investigating the incident and working on a description of the suspect.
