Congratulations go out this week to Kiara Braithwaite, the daughter of Nigel and Carol of Westhampton Beach, who recently graduated from Long Island University-Post in Brookville. Not only did she graduate magna cum laude, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in digital art and design, Kiara also finished off her academic career with a 4.0 GPA while serving as vice president of the student government association!Your parents wanted you to know how extremely proud they are of you! And so are we, Kiara. Nice job!

Congratulations also go out this week to Anthony Arfi of Westhampton. In addition to graduating from Hofstra University, Anthony was one of 10 graduating seniors from the university’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication named as a Student of the Year. Way to go, Anthony!

Did you know that one oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water in a day? Neither did I. Would you like to learn more neat facts about oysters and why they are so important to our bays?

You can do so this Saturday, May 24, from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m., at the home of Ray Dowd, located at 65 Stevens Lane here in Westhampton Beach. Scientists from the Moriches Bay Project will be in attendance to explain their ongoing initiative to restore the bay.

The “Westhampton Beach Amazing Rase” will be held on Saturday, May 24, and begins at 10:30 a.m. The event is being co-sponsored by the Hurricane Education Foundation, the Kiwanis Key Club and Rotary Interact.

Maureen’s Haven will host a performance by the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones on Saturday, May 31, at 3 p.m., at the Church of the Immaculate Conception’s Parish Hall on Quiogue. Tickets are free, but donations will gladly be accepted.

Girl Scout Troop 2168 of Westhampton will be holding a yard sale, car wash and cookie sale on Saturday, May 24, from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at 50 Sunset Avenue in the village, across from Island Surf. Proceeds will help members of the troop earn their Gold Awards. In case of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, May 25, at the same time and location.

East End Hospice will host its 20th annual North Fork Pig Roast on Saturday, May 31, from 4 to 7 p.m., over at Pindar Vineyards in Peconic. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for kids age 14 and under, which gets you roasted pig and all the fixins. There will also be an inflatable bounce house, face painting, and arts and crafts for the kids.

The Peg Larkin Memorial 5K Run/Fun Walk will be held on Sunday, June 1, starting at 9:30 a.m., at the Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School on Mill Road in Remsenburg. The fee to enter is $25 for preregistered adults ($30 the day of the race), and $20 for children 17 and under. There will also be a kid’s half-mile fun run. The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center summer camps are filling up quickly, but there is still time to sign up. Speaking of the PAC, local seniors participating in the Melodies and Memories program will put on a free performance at the theater at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1.
