The official season of summer and the end of making left turns until after Labor Day has arrived. This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. The traffic has already begun so please drive safely.There will be lifeguards at our town beaches and, I am begging you, please be kind to our beaches and take off what you bring on. Also, clean up after yourself and pets, and have fun.

The beautiful, new garbage cans lining Main Street are courtesy of AVIS (Amagansett Village Improvement Society). They are also responsible for the beautiful flowers in the planters and much more. They also maintain our trees that line Main Street. There are many opportunities available for tree-naming and a brass plaque will commemorate the donation. The Junior Lifeguard Program begins Saturday, June 21, at Indian Wells and Ditch Plains Beaches. The program runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 to 11 a.m.

Before beginning the program, you must pass the test at the YMCA. The testing takes place on Sundays from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. The program is for age 9 to 14. The lifeguards and instructors will help you achieve your swimming goals and pass the test, so stop by on Sunday. Saturday, May 24, is the date of the Classic Car Show at the Amagansett Fire Department to benefit the 100th Anniversary of the Amagansett Fire Department celebration that is on July 12. The car show takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is May 25. For sponsorship information, please go to or call (631) 726-9300. This is such a special family and collectors’ event. Flower Power story and craft time will take place at the Amagansett Library at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24. This is one of the many special programs the library brings to our hamlet.

Saturday, May 31, at 6 p.m. the artist James Mullen will be speaking at the Amagansett Library about his illustrated memoir “Leaving China; An Artist Paints his World War II Childhood.” Jim now lives in Sag Harbor and is a celebrated illustrator of many books and posters we grew up with. He began his life in China amidst turmoil, including in his family. This beautiful book displays it all. Please call the library at 267-3810 to reserve your spot for this event.

A Punt, Pass, Kick competition and fun family event will be held at the East Hampton High School turf field on Saturday, May 31, from 12 to 2 p.m. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. for age 5 to 14 and the cost is $25. You do not have to be a member of East Hampton Football to compete. The East Hampton Varsity Coaching Staff will oversee the day and events. Kids interested in playing football for the fall 2014 season can register at this event. There will be a DJ, hamburgers and hot dogs for all.

In church news, The First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett holds its worship service Sundays at 11 a.m. Sunday school for children takes place in the Yule Room.

St Michael’s Lutheran Church is located across the street from the post office. They hold their worship services Sunday at 11 a.m. They are also home to the Amagansett Satellite of the East Hampton Food Pantry on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Donations and volunteers are always welcome.

Beginning Friday night, May 23, Astro’s Pizza will begin staying open late nights for your late night slices. This weekend, they will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday late nights. They also have regular hours.
