An 11-year-old boy drowned in an East Hampton swimming pool on Saturday evening, according to East Hampton Town Police Detective Sergeant Greg Schaefer.
Police said the boy, Derek B. Smith of Brooklyn, was pulled from the bottom of a residential pool and was unresponsive. He was transported to Southampton Hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
A press release sent out on Sunday night said that East Hampton police and ambulance volunteers responded to 508 Route 114 in East Hampton at 5:08 p.m., after receiving a 911 call.
Det. Sgt. Schaefer said the death is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious. East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo said the boy was believed to be with a caregiver at the time but could not provide further details about the accident.
“There’s really not enough information right now,” Chief Sarlo said in a phone interview.
Anyone with information should contact the East Hampton Town Police Department at (631) 537-7575.
