Eastport, Remsenburg And Speonk Community Notes, June 19

Summer is just about here and, with the coming of the season, we have many congratulations to share as our kindergarteners will soon be enjoying their “Moving Up” ceremonies and our high school seniors will soon be collecting their diplomas. Those events also mean that the countdown to the final day of school has officially begun!Victoria Paparatto of Eastport graduated from Hofstra University in May, earning a Master of Arts degree in speech-language pathology.

I’d also like to recognize two students who have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at their respective colleges. Jaclyn Soucheck of Speonk attends SUNY at Geneseo, and Brenna Hanratty, also of Speonk, is enrolled at the University of Delaware.

Congratulations on your academic achievements!

Eastport South Manor Junior-Senior High School officials are pleased to announce that Danny Dowsett, the son of Daniel and Mary Ellen Dowsett of Manorville, has been named a 2014 Brine National High School All-American.

Danny has also been selected to represent the East Region at the 2014 Brine National Lacrosse Classic to be held in Boyds, Maryland, from June 30 through July 3. Daniel, who is a junior at the Manorville school, will be joined by other top high school lacrosse players from across the country, and regional teams will compete to become the 2014 National Champion. Good luck!

The East Ends Arts Council conducted its annual “Teeny Awards” ceremony on Sunday, June 8, over at Longwood High School to celebrate the achievements of our high school thespians. The Eastport South Manor Theatre Department was recognized with nine nominations for student performances and contributions to their fall comedy, “Blithe Spirit,” and their spring musical, “The Sound of Music.”

Remsenburg Garden Club members have been enjoying the spring weather. After attending a recent flower arranging workshop given by Eileen De Ricco, they are ready to practice their skills working alongside the Westhampton Garden Club while creating centerpieces for East End Hospice’s fundraiser scheduled for later this month.

Our local group is also responsible for the beautification efforts at the Remsenburg Post Office. In the wee hours of the morning and even late at night, members take turns planting, watering and maintaining the window boxes and flower beds.

Recently, club members and guests enjoyed lunch at the beautiful Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, followed by a tour of the formal grounds and sculpture gardens at The Nassau Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor. The current exhibit is called “Garden Party.” Congratulations to Lovejoy Duryease, artist and garden club member, who has one of her own paintings on exhibit.
