Camping: Where To Go For Info

Camping at Hither Hills State Park in Montauk costs as little as $28 per night, or $56 for campers who are not New York State residents. Like many others, this campground is generally filled, with reservations made far ahead of time—but a site might be scored last minute if someone cancels. Call: 1-800-456-CAMP, or go to for details.

Suffolk County has campsites at Cedar Point in East Hampton, Sears Bellows in Hampton Bays, Cupsogue in Westhampton, Montauk County Park in Montauk, as well as at Shinnecock East in Southampton. “Outer beach” campsites like Shinnecock and Montauk County Park do not allow tents and require an outer beach recreational vehicle permit, which costs $93 with a valid Suffolk County Parks Green Key Card, and $225 for non-county residents. With the Green Key, it costs $15 per night to camp at Shinnecock; without one, it costs $30 per night. Discounts are available for senior citizens and veterans, while active members of the military do not have to pay a nightly fee.

Check-in is not permitted at Shinnecock East over the weekend because of the high volume of traffic and noise on Meadow Lane, according to Emily Lauri, communication relations director for Suffolk County Parks.
