Here’s a recipe for the perfect cocktail party: pick the longest day of the year, which just happens to be the first official day of summer, and make sure it falls on a Saturday. Talk about your perfect combinations!More than 200 people attended the annual Solstice Party hosted by the Remsenburg Association this past Saturday, June 21, at the historic building on South County Road in Remsenburg.
Members and their guests exchanged hellos and those returning from warmer climes caught up on local news and met their neighbors. Goodbyes were said to Kathy and Tom McGinnis, who just sold their house, though they promised to return next summer. John, Joe, Sigrid and Mary Greiner made up one full-time family from Remsenburg in attendance on Saturday. Karl Skeris, commodore of the Westhampton Yacht Squadron on Shore Road in Remsenburg, along his wife, Marge, and son, Russell, and his wife, Fran, also enjoyed the festivities.
One goal of the annual party is to create a sense of community, which was on display in the name tags handed out Saturday; in addition to names, they featured the street addresses of members. For more information about membership opportunities and to receive the association’s email newsletter, please visit www.remsenburgassociation.com.
For those with a creative eye, here’s a contest for you to consider! Photographers are invited by ART Remsenburg to enter a photography contest being sponsored by the Remsenburg Association. Entries are due by Sunday, September 14, and will be featured as part of a show (and sale) at the Remsenburg Academy running from September 19 through October 13.
The theme of the contest is “Local Atmosphere” and includes the following categories: East End Life (lifestyle portraits, such as children at play, or people gardening, playing tennis or visiting the beach); East End Landmarks; Gardens; Nature; and Remsenburg. The winning photographs will be offered for sale through the Remsenburg Association website.
The judges are former Remsenburg resident and renowned photographer and teacher, Richard Mizdal, and Cheryl Machat Dorskind of Westhampton, an assistant professor at Suffolk County Community College and a nationally noted author, teacher, photo artist and professional photographer. Rules and entry forms are available at www.remsenburgassociation.com, at the Remsenburg Academy and at and Scales & Tails on North Phillips Avenue in Speonk.
