East Hampton’s Ravi MacGurn Reaches Finals Of Division IV Tournament; Five Bonackers Qualify For Counties

It was close to being an all-Bonac final at the boys tennis Division IV Championships at William Floyd High School on Tuesday, but it simply was not meant to be.

East Hampton’s Ravi MacGurn, the third seed in the tournament, reached the finals after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rocky Point’s Nate Hanley, the second seed, on Monday. Bonacker Jonny DeGroot, the eighth seed, reached the semifinals as well, but he lost a three-set match there to fifth-seeded Mike Koscinski of Center Moriches, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. MacGurn lost his finals match to Koscinski, 6-2, 7-6, on Tuesday.

MacGurn had reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Riverhead’s Jens Sumerlin in the quarters. DeGroot actually had to play top-seeded teammate Jack Louchheim in the quarters and won, 1-6, 7-6, 6-2. DeGroot wound up placing third in the division after Hanley backed out of Tuesday’s consolation match with an injury. Louchheim defeated Southold’s Xavier Kahn, 6-1, 6-2, to finish fifth.

The top eight singles players in the division advance to the Suffolk County Individual Tournament, which will be played back at William Floyd High School over three days, this Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20, and Monday, May 22. MacGurn, DeGroot and Louchheim all qualified for counties in the singles draw.

In the doubles bracket, Alex Weseley and Jaedon Glasstein reached the semifinals, where they lost to Westhampton Beach pair Owen Williams and Josh Kaplan, 6-4, 6-4. Since the top four doubles pairings advance to counties, Weseley and Glasstein will join their teammates this weekend. They beat Andre Insalaco and Brennan Tomlinson, 6-0, 6-4, to place third on Tuesday.

The Mariners had a couple of rough draws in the tournament and weren’t able to qualify anyone for counties.

Justin Hadix won his first-round match but then had to face top seed Jack Louchheim and was eliminated after a lose. Jomel De La Cruz had to face off against finalist Ravi MacGurn in the first round and lost, 6-1, 6-1.

Southampton’s doubles pairs were in the same situation. Michael Daffy and Ruben Schneiderman lost their first-round match to East Hampton’s James Fairchild and Bradley Drubych, who were seeded eighth. Alex Prag and Joe Gulli lost a three-set match to a Rocky Point tandem.

Section XI Tournament

East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton and Westhampton Beach each won their first round matches in the Section XI Team Tournament last week but then lost their quarterfinal matches on May 10. The fifth-seeded Bonackers lost at No. 4 Commack while the sixth-seeded Hurricanes lost at Half Hollow Hills West, the third seed. Both were 6-1 scores.

East Hampton defeated No. 12 West Islip, 5-2, in the opening round, which was May 9. The Bonackers claimed victories at second, third and fourth singles and second and third doubles. MacGurn defeated Andrew Fogel, 6-0, 6-0; DeGroot beat Evan Raible, 6-2, 6-1; Luke Louchheim defeated Jack Johnson, 6-2, 6-1; James Fairchild and Bradley Drubych won, 6-4, 6-1, over Mike Felice and Will Fix; and Hunter Medler and Jonathan Jimenez beat Zack Keogh and Sean Moran, 6-4, 6-7, 13-11.
