The cross country career of Southampton senior Gustavo Morastitla came to a close at the New York State Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Wayne Central High School.
It wasn’t an easy finish either, with tough course conditions at Wayne, located just outside of Rochester. Many local coaches described the conditions as a slushy and bumpy surface which froze over Friday night, creating sections of hard and irregular surfaces to go along with temperatures in the 20-degree range on Saturday morning. By the time the Class B race went off, which Morastitla and many of the East End runners competed in, the ground had thawed and created a muddy course.
Morastitla placed 46th out of 127 runners, crossing the finish line in 17:51. He placed second among fellow Section XI (Suffolk County) runners, finishing slightly behind Shoreham/Wading River junior Joseph Krause.
